Turnbull saw himself as a kind of visionary. One is tempted to call his descriptions an exaggeration of what he actually witnessed. Turnbull wanted to live his life as a good and generous human being he also romanticized those he studied. His knowledge of the ways of anthropology was phenomenal, and his knowledge of the Mbuti pygmies of the Ituri forest was deeply felt. On his way back to London, he stopped in Africa, thus beginning his long affair with some of the people of the continent. He took his PhD at Benares Hindu University in India, where he lived for two years, primarily under the guidance of a female seer. Colin Turnbull-anthropologist, author, lover and the subject of a new biography by Roy Richard Grinker-was born in the suburbs of London.
